My Journey: How I Passed the CompTIA A+ Exam
As some of you may know, I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity at Western Governors University. Cybersecurity is a rapidly growing field, and I have been thoroughly enjoying my learning journey thus far. My aim is to complete my degree within the next year.
So what is the CompTIA A+ Exam?
CompTIA, an American non-profit trade association, is renowned for issuing professional certifications in the information technology industry. The A+ certificate, deemed as the entry-level certification for IT professionals, comprises two separate exams: Core 1 and Core 2. It holds significant value for those seeking to venture into the IT industry.
Personal Motivation for Taking the Exam
At WGU, there is a unique opportunity where certain classes are cleared by taking certification exams from external organizations. This approach allows students to graduate not only with their degree but also with highly sought-after certifications like A+, Network+, and Security+.
Preparing for the Exam
For students at Western Governors University, I recommend joining the Discord server “Try Hard Security.” This platform offers a plethora of guides, tips, and learning resources shared by students and alumni from both the bachelor's and master's programs in cybersecurity at WGU.
Setting Goals and Creating a Study Plan
My goal was to dedicate a month to studying for each exam. Given my lack of prior experience in help desk roles, I allowed myself some extra time for preparation, although it turned out to be unnecessary.
Gathering Study Materials
I relied heavily on instructors like Jason Dion and Andrew Ramdayal on Udemy. While many favor Professor Messer’s free YouTube videos, I opted for Udemy as it was included in WGU’s tuition.
Utilizing Online Resources and Practice Exams
Andrew Ramdayal’s course provided a practical overview of the entire course catalog, albeit less comprehensive than Jason Dion's explanations. However, Jason Dion's course and practice exams covered everything needed for success, making them a valuable resource.
Establishing a Study Routine
I did not have a fixed study routine; instead, I studied whenever I could, given the extensive material that needed to be covered.
Active Learning Techniques
Jason's training included study notes, eliminating the need for me to take notes during lectures. However, some individuals prefer to take their own notes. I also found Certmaster flashcards somewhat helpful, although the exam's questions were more situation-based rather than simple True or False statements.
Hands-on Practice with Hardware and Software
The exam includes Performance-Based Questions (PBQs), which simulate lab environments where candidates must interact with software to solve various problems. Examples include troubleshooting software, handling customer queries, and building PCs.
Utilizing Mnemonic Devices for Memorization
Certain aspects of the exam require memorization, such as port numbers, troubleshooting steps, and malware removal processes. For this, I recommend creating mnemonics and employing other memory techniques.
Dealing with Difficult Topics
While individual topics weren’t necessarily difficult, the sheer volume of information initially seemed daunting. However, with perseverance, I successfully tackled each subject.
Managing Time Effectively
With 90 questions to answer within 90 minutes, effective time management was crucial. It was essential not to spend too much time on any single question and to allocate sufficient time for reviewing answers.
Maintaining Motivation and Focus
Periods of diminished motivation or focus were not uncommon. Taking breaks and resting adequately proved essential for maintaining mental sharpness. It's important to recognize that rest is as crucial as studying, as it allows the brain to form new connections.
Final Preparations
Reviewing Key Concepts and Materials
Before scheduling the exam, it's advisable to take it early in the morning when well-rested and when distractions are minimal. Additionally, it's crucial to attend to physiological needs, such as using the bathroom, before sitting for the test.
Taking Practice Exams to Assess Readiness
Saving one of Jason Dion's practice exams for the final review session before the exam can be beneficial. However, it's important to ensure that enough energy is reserved for the actual exam.
Addressing any Remaining Gaps in Knowledge
Countless YouTube videos offer practice questions and explanations to fill in any remaining knowledge gaps. However, it's essential to remember that the goal is to pass the exam, not necessarily to achieve a perfect score.
Exam Day
Tips for Managing Stress and Anxiety
Having adequately prepared, there should be little need for excessive stress or anxiety on exam day. Focusing solely on the exam and maintaining a calm demeanor is key.
Strategies for Approaching Different Types of Questions
While it's recommended to save PBQs for last, tackling them at the beginning can help alleviate anxiety and allow for better focus on multiple-choice questions.
Maintaining a Positive Mindset
Believing in oneself is paramount. Remember, it's just an exam, and success is achievable with determination and perseverance.
Post-Exam Reflection
Thoughts on the Exam Experience
Having taken Core 2 before Core 1, I found the former slightly more challenging. However, the order in which the exams are taken is ultimately a personal preference.
Celebrating Successes and Milestones
Upon completing the exam, take the time to celebrate personal achievements and share success stories with others. It's important to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work put into accomplishing this milestone.
